For the past couple of years a “Heart & Sole” program known as Girls on the Run has been providing female students with the opportunity for this ten week program that focuses on character development, confidence, positive self-image, and physical activity through interactive lessons, games, and running.
When asked about the program, Westview Elementary’s sponsor Taylor Arehart explained, “We talk about making healthy food choices and work on emotional health by discussing how to recognize and deal with different types of emotions that everyone experiences. We discuss social healthy and talk about how to deal with arguments, bullies, and friendships. Most importantly, we talk every practice about building ourselves up with positive self-talk, goal setting, and strategies for having a positive self-image.”
Practice takes place twice a week after school. The season is ten weeks long and participants will celebrate the completion of the program with the Girls on the Run 5K, which will be on Saturday, November 4th at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City.
There is a cost of $165 to participate in the program, however, there are multiple Kansas City area donors to the program that provide scholarships for those needing financial assistance. Students qualifying for free and reduced lunch may be eligible for an automatic scholarship.
For more information on this program, please contact the office of the school building your child attends and ask for the Girls on the Run sponsor.
